What it changes in the music

An audio oscillator gives a patch its starting signal. Its frequency relates to pitch, while waveform shape influences harmonic content. Multiple oscillators can be tuned together, separated by intervals or detuned slightly. Their combination is then shaped by envelopes, filters and other stages. A useful sound does not require the maximum number of oscillators available.

A small experiment

Hold one note while comparing two oscillator shapes through the same envelope. Match their apparent levels and describe the difference before adding effects.

Keep this distinction clear

An oscillator is a source, while an envelope or LFO often supplies a control signal. A modulation source may change an oscillator without being heard directly.
