What it changes in the music

Sine, triangle, saw-like and pulse shapes offer different starting spectra in many synthesizers. Real instruments and processed signals can have more complex changing waveforms. A static picture is therefore only one view of the sound. Envelope, pitch, level and processing still affect the listening result, even when the oscillator starts from a familiar named shape.

A small experiment

Compare a simple and a richer waveform at the same note and with the same note shape. Listen for the upper texture rather than changing the filter immediately.

Keep this distinction clear

A waveform display does not by itself describe musical quality or complete loudness behavior. Two different-looking shapes can serve the same role effectively.
