What it changes in the music

Dynamics can refer to a note’s envelope, differences between hits or contrasts across sections. Those scales call for different decisions. A compressor may alter short-term behavior without creating a meaningful larger arrangement arc. Similarly, a section can become more active through density while its level changes little. Name the scale before deciding what should become more or less dynamic.

A small experiment

Compare a passage’s strongest and softer events, then compare two sections. Write separate notes for local articulation and larger structural contrast.

Keep this distinction clear

Dynamics and loudness are not identical. One describes variation and relationships, while loudness concerns perceived magnitude under specific listening conditions.
