What it changes in the music

Compression can control peaks, change an envelope or create a rhythmic effect. Threshold, ratio, attack, release and other design features interact, so no one knob determines the full result. Added output gain can make a treated version seem more exciting. Compare at similar apparent levels and identify whether the processor improves the particular relationship you meant to change.

A small experiment

Apply moderate compression to a repeating percussive source. Match the output level and compare the onset, body and recovery separately.

Keep this distinction clear

Compression and simply lowering a fader are different. A fader applies a general level change; a compressor’s reduction changes according to its detector and behavior over time.
