What it changes in the music

Loudness is not fully captured by a single instantaneous peak value. Two versions with different spectral or dynamic behavior can seem differently prominent even when some meter readings match. In practical comparisons, bring their apparent levels close and focus on the property you intended to change. Keep monitoring comfortable rather than repeatedly raising level to reveal subtle details.

A small experiment

Compare two processed versions, then compensate playback gain until neither is obviously louder. Reevaluate the original preference and identify which musical differences remain.

Keep this distinction clear

Loudness, amplitude and peak level are connected but distinct. A larger waveform peak does not by itself describe the full perceived experience of a passage.
