What it changes in the music

An arpeggio can turn a harmonic idea into rhythmic movement. Order, subdivision and note length shape its identity. A simple repeated pattern can feel very different when its chord changes underneath it or when one event is withheld. Keep the supporting bass and percussion understandable so the arpeggio does not compete for every part of the arrangement.

A small experiment

Take a simple chord and play its notes one at a time in a repeating order. Compare short detached notes with longer overlapping ones at the same tempo.

Keep this distinction clear

An arpeggio is not automatically a random sequence. It has a relationship to chord tones, even when the order is varied or generated by an instrument.
