What it changes in the music

Straight eighths divide a quarter-note beat in two; sixteenths divide it in four. Triplets offer another grouping. A pattern can imply more activity by adding subdivisions without changing tempo. The grid is a reference rather than a requirement to fill every position. Empty positions and unequal accent strengths are part of the rhythmic result.

A small experiment

At a fixed tempo, play a kick pulse and compare a hat on each beat, then two and then four equal hat events per beat. Keep the hat level controlled.

Keep this distinction clear

More subdivisions do not automatically create a better groove. Their articulation and relationship to the main accents determine whether the added activity is useful.
