What it changes in the music

A motif can remain recognizable while its sound, register or surrounding harmony changes. Preserve a defining feature when developing it so the listener can follow the connection. Adding another instrument may reinforce a motif without developing the idea itself. A short rhythmic figure can function as a motif just as effectively as a pitched melody.

A small experiment

Choose a four-note idea and keep its rhythm fixed while changing one final note or octave placement in the next phrase. Compare recognition and contrast.

Keep this distinction clear

A motif is not necessarily a full melody or a complete phrase. It can be a compact ingredient used to build larger musical statements.
