What it changes in the music
A breakdown may remove the main drums, expose harmony or reset density before a return. Its purpose depends on the track. An empty section is not automatically meaningful just because the kick leaves. Identify what becomes the new foreground and how the later arrival relates to it. The section’s length should support that transformation.
A small experiment
Remove the kick from a working section and listen to what becomes the main idea. If nothing clear emerges, simplify or develop the remaining material before extending the section.
Keep this distinction clear
A breakdown is not synonymous with a quiet version of the full mix. The arrangement can change its roles and information, not merely its output level.
