What it changes in the music
A sub-bass layer often has a simpler spectrum and a central role beneath a more textured bass. Its usefulness depends on playback capability, arrangement and headroom. Very low energy can be present without clearly communicating the rhythmic phrase on every system. A more audible harmonic layer may improve translation while the foundation remains restrained.
A small experiment
Mute the textured bass layer and listen to what the low foundation contributes. Restore the upper layer and check whether the two feel like one coherent instrument.
Keep this distinction clear
Sub-bass is not simply a synonym for any loud bass. Register, spectrum and musical role matter, and an arbitrary frequency boundary does not fully define the part.
