What it changes in the music

Moving a phrase by an octave changes its register while preserving its interval pattern. A lower version may gain weight but lose audible definition on some systems. A higher one may reveal the line or compete with another part. Judge the new position in the arrangement rather than assuming the lowest octave is the most appropriate bass register.

A small experiment

Duplicate a phrase and move it one octave. Compare the versions separately with the same kick and chords, keeping their apparent prominence reasonably similar.

Keep this distinction clear

An octave move is not a change of key by itself. It changes the register of the notes, while the tonal relationships can remain the same.
