What it changes in the music
A mono synth can interpret overlapped notes differently from separated ones. It may keep an envelope running or apply portamento only during overlap. Those behaviors depend on the patch and instrument. Before writing a connected phrase, test whether note overlap changes the attack, the pitch transition or both. The musical gesture comes from that interaction, not the label alone.
A small experiment
Play two separated notes and then overlap them on the same patch. Listen for whether the second note starts with a new attack or continues the earlier envelope.
Keep this distinction clear
Legato and long release are different. A release can leave a tail after a note ends, while legato concerns the connection and triggering relationship between notes.
