What it changes in the music

Clipping may create audible distortion and is sometimes used deliberately by specialized processors. Unintended clipping can occur at different points in a chain and may not disappear when a later fader is lowered. Identify where the alteration begins. A clipped input followed by a quiet output is still a changed signal, even if the final meter has margin.

A small experiment

Use a safe listening level and compare an undistorted signal with a deliberately clipped test copy. Lower the clipped copy afterward and note that its altered texture remains.

Keep this distinction clear

A lower output level does not undo clipping that already occurred upstream. Preventing an unwanted overload and turning down its result are different operations.
